Background: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide. Chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of treatment but is frequently associated with physical, psychological, and social challenges that negatively affect patients' quality of life. Social support has emerged as an important psychosocial factor that may alleviate treatment-related burdens and promote better health outcomes. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence regarding the relationship between social support and quality of life among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Methods: A literature review was conducted by analyzing recent empirical studies that examined the association between social support and quality of life in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
Results: The results demonstrated a positive association between social support and quality of life among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Patients receiving higher levels of emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal support from family members, healthcare professionals, peers, and the community reported better physical functioning, psychological well-being, treatment adherence, coping ability, and overall quality of life. Family support was identified as a particularly influential factor during the early stages of chemotherapy, contributing to greater motivation to complete treatment and improved adaptation to chemotherapy-related adverse effects.
Conclusion: Current evidence indicates that social support is a key determinant of quality of life among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Integrating comprehensive psychosocial support into oncology nursing care may enhance patients' resilience, treatment adherence, and overall well-being.
